Change has been a topic on my heart lately. So many of my friends and family have big changes coming up. I have a friend who’s moving away today and many others who moved this summer or have a big move coming up this fall, some friends of mine got engaged last weekend, I have a cousin getting married this weekend, tons of friends starting new jobs, one of the kids I’ve babysat for years is learning to drive and the other one is moving up to middle school. I was looking at pictures of my friends’ and family’s babies on Facebook and I couldn’t stop thinking about how FAST a year goes by and how fast a baby grows up!
There are so many times when I think, let’s just slow down or pause time so life can stay like this longer!! I like things the way they are! I don’t want my friends to move away! I don’t want the babies to grow up just yet, they are so fun the way they are! Change is often so scary and sad. Even the exciting changes that I love (like weddings and new babies) can bring about some pretty big and scary changes!
Regardless of whether or not I want the changes to happen, there are two things that I know. First, I know that change is a constant and it will happen whether I approve it or not. There will always be change. And second, I know that there is One who will never change and He is the one in charge of change! He will never bring about a change in our lives that isn’t ultimately for our good, even if we can’t see that in the moment. We don’t know what the future holds, but we do know that we can trust God. We don’t have to wonder if a change in our life is going to be ok or not. God has a plan and a purpose for all of our lives and He will work in His perfect timing.
So, when big changes start to happen, I can choose how to react. I can react in fear and try in vain to cling to the way things are. Or, I can set my feet on the Rock and get my stability from Him. I can be excited when changes come up because I know that God is on His throne and He is working out His plan for my life through the changes.
There is a song I was listening to this morning called “From The Inside Out”. It reminded me that God and His promises to me are the only things in my life that are truly everlasting and never ending. It also reminded me that my life is about HIM and not about me.
